This is our last full week of school. Graduation Mass is on Friday morning. Students need to wear their school uniforms. We will walk over to church for this celebration. Please make sure all make-up work is complete by Wednesday. Have a great week.

As the year is coming to a close I would just like to remind you that all make-up work or incomplete assignments need to be submitted to me by June 8. Also, I would like to thank all of you for your support and kindness as we journeyed through this past school year. Your help and generousity were amazing. Working as a team with me helps the academic progress of the students.
This week in Religion our focus is on the lives and contributions of saints and holy people in our Christian faith as well as praying a decade of the rosary every day for the people of the Mid-west and the recovery from the volcanic eruption in Iceland.
In Science our unit on Weathering and Erosion ties in well with the current events news of today. The students will debate about protecting our homes in flood plains and the controversy surrounding housing developments in these regions.

Wow! What a fantastic event yesterday. Thank you to all the parent volunteers!
This week we will honor Mary with a special Mass on Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. in the church. Also, the sixth grade has their Retreat in the Parish Hall that day at 12:30 p.m. Just a reminder that their is NO School on Firday and Monday for the Memorial Day Holiday. See you on Tuesday, the last day of May, (already)!

Thank you to so many of you that made Crusader Day a fantastic event! Now we have another fun event planned for the families, our Spring Festival. Please make sure that you have signed up for helping us with the Sixth Grade booth. Mrs. Reynolds has sent an updated schedule via e-mail. Let us know if there is a conflict in schedule. We are all looking forward to this day filled with games, great food, fun, arts and crafts, music and dancing and so much more!
Academically, the students are really growing by leaps and bounds and are just about ready to be seventh graders. I was so proud of them running for the various Student Council offices. Their speeches were well-done! We will complete the unit on Adverbs in English with a test on Wednesday as well as our unit in Science on Mapping the Earth’s Surface. In Literature we are capping the year by learning about the genre:poetry. The students have read poems that are written in special forms, such as , concrete, haiku and
limerick. They seemed to enjoy the concrete style where they could write their poems in a shape of the subject, such as “Concrete Cat”.

May 9-13
Hope you had a nice Mother’s Day. The students did an amazing job performing at the Spring Follies on Friday! This will be a busy week with many activities; such as Crusader Day on Tuesday, Mass on Wednesday and Student Council elections on Friday. In Religion our focus is on lessons about the missions and helping the impoverished. These lessons cover five days, therefore we will not have our disucussion about the pillar Caring on Monday for Character Counts and Venture booklet lessons on the Sunday Gospel. Please submit all Holy Childhood donation coin cards by Tuesday, May 10. I need to submit this to the association by the end of this week. In Science we will complete our unit this week on Mapping the Earth’s Surface. We took a short break from these chapter lesson in Unit 6 to complete the activities for Earth Day studies.
Our literary focus continues to be: common ground. This week we will apply this to the short stories and essays for the genre: Nonfiction. Our first story selection we will read is an historical essay called, “Shut-out”. We need to postpone the literature test on “Grandpa and the Statue” to Thursday due to the activities this week.

It is already May!  How did that happen?  I hope you had a nice Easter vacation and are ready to complete the school year in six weeks. 

This week  the Spring Follies are on Friday, May 6 at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall.  Sounds like this will be an evening filled with great talent from our students!  They certainly have been practicing! 

Academically, we will continue to study the genre: drama in Literature.  Additionally, we will complete our unit on Ancient Greece and the test is on Thursday, May 5.  The students will also learn about the customs, traditions and historical significance surrounding the holiday, Cinco de Mayo on Thursday, May 5. We will continue to sharpen our creative writing skills and paragraph formations as we study narrative writing and adverbs in English this week.  Have a nice week!

  Happy Easter to everyone!

This week we will attend a pizza luncheon at Sunrise Homes and participate in the art contest on Tuesday, April 19.  We will return at approximately 2:45 p.m.  Due to this change in schedule the students will perform their skits on Monday after recess and present their posters at Social Studies class in the afternoon.

Additionally, we will have Mass on Wednesday and the first grade will lead.

Thursday is an early dismissal day at 12:30 p.m.  Have a blessed, Easter holiday.  See you on Monday, May 2.

 Apr 11-15, 2011

The sixth graders continue to “fine tune” their descriptive essay writing skills to become stronger and more organized writers.  Their final typed, double spaced, five-six  paragraph essays are due Tuesday.  To assist in the process please refer to the Writing and Research Handbook “Using the 6+1 Trait Model” on pages 682-683.  The cluster diagram created together on the Smart Board will also be helpful in the completion of this assignment.  As a class we created an opening paragraph.  However, some students chose to use their own.  Class time was given to complete or edit the body of the essay.

We continue our journey through Lent and will begin to study Holy Week .  This section can be found in their Religion book  in the “Feasts and Seasons”.  Just a reminder that the collection for the Holy Childhood collection is due next Monday.

The Mythology Group Project skits will be performed in class on April 18 and the 19th.  Students are actively creating their skits and costumes.  A rubric grading method will be used to assess this activity.  I’ll post this rubric in the homework section below.

The sixth graders will be going on a field trip on Thursday, April 7, 2011 to the Sunrise Homes for an art contest and pizza lunch party.  Permission slips need to be returned by Tuesday, April 5.

Also, this week we will focus on the three R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle for our daily morning writing prompts for Earth Day, April 22.  Today’s prompt is:  Some ways to recycle are____.This is important to me because______. In English the students will complete their final draft of the descriptive writing essay about their Monet paintings. 

We will be participating in the VIRTUS Safeguard God’s Children lessons this week on Monday and Tuesday.  Also, we continue our studies about Lent.  Mass is on Wednesday, April 6 and the First Grade will lead.

For the end of the book test on The Westing Game students should focus on the main characters of the novel and a description of each role they played in the “game”.  Additionally,  study the two quizzes returned.

Mar 28-Apr 1

This week in sixth grade we will continue to learn about the Impressionist  Claude Monet and his famous works of art while completing our sketches.  Additionally, the students are composing a descriptive essay about their Monet sketches for the art contest.  We are reviewing the writing techniques for descriptive essays by focusing on the use of  sensory details to create images of  sound, taste, smell, sight and touch to describe the paintings created.  Also, the students will continue to complete their research for the Greek Mythology Group Report drama presentations.  This is due before Easter Break on Monday, April 18.  On Wednesday we have a special guest speaker, Mr. Corcoran, a writer and director for films.  He will explain his career and teach the students about script writing and other techniques to help create their myth production for next month’s Social Studies project.

As we continue in our Lenten journey the students will participate in the Stations of the Cross on Friday morning and pray for those in need, be helpful, and generous to others.

The literature test on the novel, The Westing Game will be on Tuesday next week.  The following questions will be discussed and reviewed in class on Friday. We will complete the novel on Thursday, March 31.
